For 0≤r<R≤∞, the annulus A(r,R,α) is
A(r,R,α)={z∈C:r<∣z−α∣<R}
Let cn∈C for each n∈Z. The doubly infinite series
n=−∞∑∞cn(z−α)n=n=1∑∞c−n(z−α)−n+n=0∑∞cn(z−α)n
is called a Laurent series, provided both series on the right-hand side converge.
Laurent’s Theorem
Let f be analytic in the annulus A(r,R,α). Then f has a Laurent series representation on A(r,R,α).
f(z)=n=−∞∑∞cn(z−α)n,z∈A(r,R,α)
The coefficients are
cn=2πi1∫∣ζ−α∣=s(ζ−α)n+1f(ζ)dζ
Here:
- n∈Z
- s: any radius with r<s<R
- the circle ∣ζ−α∣=s is oriented counterclockwise
Properties
- The Laurent series representation of f on A(r,R,α) is unique.
- A Laurent series can be differentiated term by term inside its annulus of convergence.
Examples:
- z4cosz−1=−2z21+241−720z2+⋯ centered at 0
- exp(−z21)=∑n=0∞n!z2n(−1)n centered at 0
Different Annuli
The same function has a different Laurent series on each annulus bounded by its singular points.
Consider
f(z)=2+z−z23=2−z1+1+z1
The singular points are z=2 and z=−1 with ∣z∣=2 and ∣z∣=1. The centered series at 0 are as follows.
- ∣z∣<1
∑n=0∞(2n+11+(−1)n)zn
- 1<∣z∣<2
∑n=0∞2n+1zn+∑n=0∞(−1)nz−n−1
- ∣z∣>2
∑n=0∞((−1)n−2n)z−n−1
