Capacitors

Made of two conductive plates separated by a dielectric layer.

In an ideal capacitor, the charge imbalance QQ is proportional to the voltage VV across the plates.

Q=CVQ = CV

The proportionality constant is the capacitance (CC), in terms of physical dimensions:

C=ϵAdC = \frac{\epsilon A}{d}
Here:
ϵ\epsilon
permittivity of the material in-between
dd
distance between the plates
AA
area of a plate

v and i

Current ii passing through the capacitor and the voltage vv across the capacitor are related by:

i=Cdvdti = C \frac{\text{d}v}{\text{d}t}

Energy Stored

Suppose voltage across an initially uncharged capacitor rises from 00 to VV during a time period of tt.

e=∫0tp dt=∫0tvi dt=C∫0vv dve = \int_{0}^{t} p\,dt = \int_{0}^{t} vi\,dt = C \int_{0}^{v} v\,dv E=12CV2E = \frac{1}{2}CV^2
