Analytic Functions

A function ff is said to be analytic at z0z_0 iff it is differentiable throughout a neighbourhood of z0z_0. Aka. regular functions, holomorphic functions and monogenic functions.

Examples

  • Polynomial functions of zz (analytic everywhere)
  • Functions with a converging Taylor series for all zz (analytic everywhere)
    • sin⁡z\sin z
    • cos⁡z\cos z
    • eze^z

Non-Examples

FunctionNote
∣z∣2\lvert z \rvert ^2Differentiable only at z=0z=0.
z‾\overline{z}Nowhere differentiable. Derivative taken on the real and imaginary axes are different.
Re(z)\text{Re}(z)Similar to above.
z+z‾z+\overline{z}Similar to above.
Im(z)\text{Im}(z)Similar to above.
z−z‾z-\overline{z}Similar to above.

Analytic Implies Differentiable

f is analytic at z0  ⟹  f is differentiable at z0f \text{ is analytic at } z_0 \implies f \text{ is differentiable at } z_0
